Share Our Strength is a nonprofit organization that works to end hunger and poverty in the U.S. and abroad. Through proven and effective campaigns like No Kid Hungry and Cooking Matters, Share Our Strength connects people who care to ideas that work. Share Our Strength believes that everyone has a strength to share to help ensure every individual can live a healthy and productive life.

1 in 7 children in the United States lives with hunger. To address this need, Share Our Strength boldly launched the No Kid Hungry campaign in 2010 to end childhood hunger in the U.S. At the time of launch, leadership had a strong vision but needed to develop a strategic direction that could clearly define the campaign approach and measures for success. Josh Wachs joined the Share Our Strength Executive Team as the organization’s first Chief Strategy Officer to develop and drive the No Kid Hungry campaign forward.

In his role Josh focused on the following areas:

Created a Theory of Change to guide the campaign – Through a collaborative process that included input from usual and unusual suspects, Josh led the development of a Theory of Change to ensure that everyone was working from the same roadmap. The process included intensive research into the field and a plan for what it would take to reach the vision of No Kid Hungry. The Theory of Change helped define the key areas of intervention and short and long-term measures for success.

Developed a strong advocacy strategy – Building on Josh’s experience in politics and extensive relationships with key government players, Josh led partnership development with federal, state, and local government entities to advocate for No Kid Hungry programs. He developed a large-scale program with Governors, who are responsible for executing these programs.  For the first time, Share Our Strength was also engaged at the Republican and Democratic National Conventions.  Josh helped the organization break through the political paralysis that characterizes Washington and actually get measurable things done.

Developed an executive dashboard – To ensure accountability and progress, Josh led an effort to create an executive level measurement dashboard that regularly tracked key measures across the entire organization – revenue, programs, and operations. The dashboard provided the needed historical and predictive analytics for the organization to pivot strategy as needed to maximize goals.

In Josh’s time at Share Our Strength, the organization doubled in revenue size and media presence, driven by the compelling and impactful No Kid Hungry program. Most importantly, kids in underserved communities received millions of more meals.
